Wherever you are, we hope you had a safe holiday season! The new GI Bill is almost here; as MLive notes, benefits will be available August 9th for the fall '09 semester at colleges and universities nationwide. If you or someone you know has been through the process of choosing a school, you may know how much of a difference there can be in paying for out-of-state and in-state tuition. State schools like the University of Michigan, for example, were founded to give Michigan students the best local opportunities at a lower cost than students from elsewhere. Two Iraq War veteran students at Ann Arbor want all veterans to get the same opportunity and pay only in-state tuition from their new GI Bill benefits; Ohio and Illinois have already done so. Theoretically, many of these veterans will stay in the area and provide a disciplined, motivated local workforce. Sounds like a solid way to build loyatly to a school and a community. If you are planning on using these new benefits, keep looking for other states that are finding new ways to make the most of them! Have a great week.
