Military to Teachers in Philly

A partnership between the Navy and the Delaware Valley Industrial Resource Center has led to the first of hopefully many veteran Sailors landing a teaching career in the Philadelphia area.  The goal is to find Navy veterans with extensive backgrounds in science and math, and that certainly should not be a problem - those with nuclear backgrounds ("Nukes"), for instance, study everything from thermodynamics to nuclear physics to chemistry.  Great fit and great idea.  

Law Enforcement Careers For Retired Military

I've received emails from folks who have been separated for quite some time, or who have retired from the military recently, and ask what career options are out there for them.  This is a great story on that subject, coming from Montana... who wouldn't want to work with a view like that?  The man profiled, a retired Marine in his mid-40s, gets to see the great outdoors every day as a Montana Highway Patrolman.  He notes that he and the younger recruits taught each other a lot, and a Highway Patrol recruiter mentions what a good fit the career can be for retired military.  Keep it in mind in your searching and have a great week!   

VA, Nats Thank DC Military

We're coming to Baltimore next week, and right down the road this Friday in DC, the VA has teamed up with the Washington Nationals for a Veterans Appreciation Day.  The link (Forbes) tells you where you can get discounted tickets to the game and special ceremonies; all veterans, VA workers, and their families are invited to attend.  I would add that if you aren't a veteran, this is a great way to show your thanks!  The Yankees and the Royals have both helped us promote our events in the past; MLB certainly seems to me to be the most military-friendly of the major leagues (though others are getting on board). 

Nevada Veterans Need More Services

Noting that "veterans need to continually have the opportunity to get more information" - something with which I obviously agree! - the Lieutenant Governor of Nevada is pushing the state to grow its veterans programs.  We'll be right next door twice in October, in San Francisco and Los Angeles.  I can never stress enough that these events are our Western Regional hiring events - employers come from everywhere across the neighboring states with positions nationwide and overseas, and a willingness to relocate only makes you a more attractive candidate! 

NC Veterans Return to Helping Hands

The American Legion has teamed up with North Carolina-based Kerr Drugs for the "Help Wounded Tar Heel Troops" program.  Donations will be accepted at Kerr stores - one of which I visited all the time - to provide financial assistance to veterans from the state and their families.  The link estimates that over 12,000 wounded veterans live in the state.  The overall military population is the nation's fourth-largest - we will be in Raleigh in November for the first time and are thrilled to meet as many of you as we can!  Best of luck, best thoughts to everyone battling the storms nationwide, and have a safe week.

Military and Veterans: Get Hired Tomorrow in Houston

The show is ready to go tomorrow in Houston!  This is our 9/11 Memorial Event and we would not miss it for absolutely anything.  Our team just flew in, and we will be wrapping up by 4 pm to keep everyone safe.  It's our final event of the year in Texas, and a huge variety of employers have jumped at the chance to meet with the Lone Star State's best and brightest military talent.  Opportunities abound from the community (City of Houston) to overseas (KBR) and everywhere in between.  Thank you to everyone who has committed to be with us on this day - we and our employers honor your service and hope to make your civilian career experience a great one.

IRS Exceeds '08 Military Hiring Goal

As the new IRS commissioner was sworn in this February, he promised to hire more veterans, with a goal of 1,000 military hires.  Barely seven months later, that goal has been exceeded, which is tremendous news.  The IRS has attended events with us all throughout the year, along with being featured on our home page with a direct link to their careers page!  Congratulations to a truly military-friendly organization.   

New Corporate Mentorship Program For Veterans

Pretty outstanding work being done here by the aptly named Sidney Goodfriend.  A former Wall Street banker, Goodfriend has set up a foundation to create some seriously powerful friendships for returning veterans, pairing them with mentors from companies like MilitaryStars clients Verizon and the Home Depot and Orion International client General Electric.  The corporate mentor spends four hours a month with the veteran, doing anything from having lunch to going fishing (both of which get enthusiastic thumbs up from me).  I regularly stress the importance of mentoring relationships here, and it's great to see someone with money and connections using them for transitioning veterans.  Hope it inspires you - have a great week!
