The first priority for the Kentucky state legislature this year is a veteran hiring bill - it seeks to grant preference to veterans for any type of state government position. The bill presents a welcome addition to the usual "points" preference: for positions that don't require written tests, state agencies would be required to interview veterans in their hiring process. State Rep. Tanya Pullin is the chairwoman of the House Military Affairs Committee and noted:
"We talk about what we can do for our veterans all the time, but one of the best things we can do for them is help them get jobs."
That is a tremendous thing to hear from a lawmaker; here's hoping her colleagues take those words to heart!

Kentucky update
House Bill 57, sponsored by Rep Cherry(D-Princeton), was the first bill to pass the House Committee on Military Affairs in this 08 session and has now passed the House of Representatives (97-0). The bill gives a preference for state jobs, even those jobs that do not require a test, for veterans. The bill must now be passed by the Senate and signed by the governor for it to become law. This bill is good for veterans and for taxpayers who would benefit from the veteran's additional training and discipline put to use in a state job.

That's wonderful news, Ms. Pullin! Thank you for stopping by and letting us know. Your quote in the post sums up what we believe in here at MilitaryStars. Best of luck with the next steps for the bill!
